A GARGOYLE AND MOSS

Talking with a fellow voluntary Exhibition Steward at Winchester Cathedral, an interesting and possibly unusual subject became a mutually magnetic topic.

No matter how many times at the Cathedral, there is always something never noticed before. Not seeking anything in particular, an object becomes unexpectedly visible. For example, a miniature gargoyle, which may have been carved by a person who sculptured that area of the Cathedral, leaving it as if signing a painting. It is so tiny and easy to miss. NB: 'Gargoyle' is of French origin: 'Garguille'. Strolling along a beautiful avenue of trees, a particular pattern of moss at the base of a tree trunk draws attention.

Following a tree trunk from top branches touching a blue sky down to ground level prompted closer examination.

Surely it cannot be a forest. Perhaps another world visits senses, further enlivening imagination and perhaps a degree of fantasy.

Kneeling down for a closer look, moss becomes a forest of trees in its own right. Every tiny element becomes a branch leading to the sky with leaves to match. A much closer look opens pathways along a mossy avenue of trees. But moss; tall moss, does offer a different perspective. Eventually standing up and looking down upon the moss, tiny forest trees still present themselves as though reality has replaced imagination.

For an onlooker it creates a feeling resembling a flying dream. Reality replaced by fantasy.

A dear family member gently suggested not to always look above towards the sky, but below at a tree's base and enter a world that has always existed, but almost never noticed. Moss is moss. Just a usual green covering a tree base.

Allowing the heart freedom to be closer to Nature is a privilege.

Each element a world of its own.
